The hinge is screwed into place. This metal assembly serves as a hinge, a lift cylinder, and a damper. It has a torsional spring inside which lifts the weight of the door. It is also filled with fluid to control the rate and make it slow. One of my damper assemblies has a bit of a leak and I fear with eventually be without fluid and lose its damping function.
