Set 8620 was released in 1986 as the smallest of 4 sets in the new Arctic Action theme, and the smallest non-promotional set to date.  This set features rack and pinion steering and one of the new Technic figures with a helmet, skis, and poles.  It uses some unusual construction angles made possible by the use of connectors as structural elements.

This simple set would hold little interest in and of itself, but it compliments the rest of the Arctic Action theme nicely.  Arctic rescue is obviously a hazardous profession as is evidenced by the driver's severed arm.  Luckily the cold climate froze it immediately so he has it stowed for later re-attachment.

Features

Steering
The front wheels can be steered using a wheel at the driver's position.  The wheel drives an axle connected to a 16 tooth spur gear. The gear drives a rack.  The steering mechanism itself uses control arms and toothed links.

This represents the second time a spur gear mated with a rack gear at an angle other than 90 degrees.
