In 1987, one year after the first Kyosho Ultima was
released, Joel Johnson won a world championship using a heavily
modified Ultima. His Ultima was so different that it was barely
recognizable. Instead of the signature formed aluminum chassis, it
used a carbon plate. The standard shock towers were replaced with
FRP variants, the shocks were replaced with larger bore variants from
the Turbo Optima, the wheels were replaced with more traditional
variants, and even the body was replaced with the one from the
Tomahawk. I discuss the details of all the changes in my build
log. This chassis was released as a product in 2023 to coincide
with Kyosho's 60th anniversary.
Racing buggies usually have very complex liveries, but this one is both
simple and ugly. I wouldn't normally copy box art that is so
plain, but since this is a historic model I felt that I needed to use
it. This one will be a shelf queen anyway.
