Gmade Komodo Project

Page 2: Upgrades!

I originally intended these Proline wheels to go on my SCX10 Cherokee, but I realized that since I had glued the tires to the wheels I could not use them without getting new tires.  So I decided to use the wheels on the Komodo instead.  I replaced the stock plastic beadlocks with these beautiful Proline aluminum beadlocks using the stock tires which fit perfectly.  Besides looking really good, this adds some weight down low to improve stability.

To go with new body I had planned I needed a front bumper.  Because the Dodge has a narrow front end I wanted a narrow bumper with room for a winch.  I chose an RC4WD Tough Armor bumper and a big 1:8 scale Warn winch.  It looks really good up there.  I mounted the winch controller to the front of the radio box as shown.  The bumper did not come with any mounting brackets and RC4WD was out of stock on the versions I would have used, so I made my own out of some hardware stock L-brackets.  I also added some aluminum tow shackles to the bumper.

The stock Komodo has a wheelbase on 287mm, but I needed 313mm to fit the new Dodge body.  Luckily, I found some spacers from GMade which, if added to both ends of all 8 links, got me exactly what I needed.  The photo on the right compares a stock link with a version having both spacers installed.

This shows the suspension setup with all the extended links installed.  As you can see from the photo on the right, the wheelbase matches the Dodge body perfectly.  After some paint, this is going to be like a totally new truck.  Not shown, I also added some halogen colored LEDs in the front light housings.

The light buckets which are part of the body are very weak.  They are just part of the polycarbonate body and the lenses don't fit tightly and are covered with a sticker which blocks most of the light.  I lost one the first time out.  Luckily I found a 3D printed light set which also added tail and side lights.  This image shows the wiring.  There were no connectors so I had to do some soldering.

Here are the final lights.  I think they look really good and add a lot of character compared with the stock body.  I was also pleased that I didn't need to add a light controller because these are wired directly to the receiver.
